Over the past few years and events, The Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ has raised thousands of dollars for charities that give back to the local community. Detroit is traditionally for Project Beautiful Inside and Out, a charity that helps women and children in Detroit-area shelters. For the first Las Vegas event we raised money for Drive ONE, a charity that helps disadvantaged youths learn vocational skills related to the auto industry. And in the near future we expect to be raising money for Bryan Thompson’s Design Scholarship. But for Los Angeles our charity of choice is The Petersen Museum.
Rated by CNN, Octane, and Top Gear as “the world’s greatest automotive museum” the Petersen Automotive Museum has always been an amazing setting for glamorous celebrations. But, after its 2015 total transformation inside and out, it’s become a positively astounding place. Here are a few pictures from the Museum I took this week.
The main floor holds the Mullin Grand Salon. The Petersen prides itself on the regular changes to the automobiles on exhibition. The theme of the Grand Salon is currently the Art of Bugatti, a collection of artifacts and 20 rare vehicles that celebrates the best of the Bugatti 3 generations’ creations.
To the side is the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery. Usually the home to BMW Art Cars, right nor the gallery is full of lowriders and lowrider-inspired art. The High Art of Riding Low, Ranflas, Corazón e Inspiración is also found in the lobby. 50 artists visualize, celebrate, and interrogate the lowrider car through vehicles, paintings, sculptures, and site-specific installations. The lowrider car (ranfla) inspires many artists, but it is especially celebrated by Chicana/o artists throughout the Southwest. Symbols of cultural pride (corazón), and icons of everyday life experiences, lowriders also embody the formation of multicultural communities through a passion for a specific form of car customization. As “canvases of self-expression,” lowriders serve as the basis of artistic creativity (inspiración), inspiring generations of artists to engage with their iconography, performativity, and aesthetics.
Upstairs you will find my favorite exhibit; The Eagles have Landed. This exhibit illustrates the diversity of race cars built by Gurney’s AAR team – from the first Eagle Indy car of 1966 to the final CART Champ car built in 1999- with a total of 11 vehicles on display. Significant technological advancements and racing milestones will be highlighted. The extent of AAR’s success—78 race victories in a wide range of race formats—will be explained with a special emphasis on Gurney’s own victory at Spa in 1967, which made him the first and only American in Grand Prix racing to win in a car of his own construction.
You can also find SEEING RED: 70 YEARS OF FERRARI, HARLEY VS. INDIAN and much much more.
Of course any visit would not be complete without a tour of the vault (cameras strictly prohibited). The Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ is a benefit for The Petersen Automotive Museum. AND,as a special offer, if you make a donation of $25, the Museum will also give you a free ticket to attend
The Museum has more than 300 vehicles on display including historic race cars, iconic Hollywood cars and rare, award-winning Hot Rods presented in 25 stunning galleries. It is also home to the famous Vault, where visitors can experience a guided tour through the the Petersen’s extended collection, held in the lower level of the museum. Having recently undergone a 90 million dollar, record-breaking renovation this past year, the Petersen has poised itself to be the world’s leading automotive museum and a center for automotive thought.
