The Students – #MSBEXP-LA Small Business Saturday

In keeping with our theme of Thanksgiving week, today is Small Business Saturday.  And that makes me think of our Student Contestants, and all the odd jobs they do to help cover the crushing amount of loans a Design Degree incurs.  So, without further ado, let’s meet the 9 student sketch-battlers competing in next week’s Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ Los Angeles presented by BASF……TED_4204

Omar Gonzalez – Art Center College of Design

The only former winner in this list, Omar Gonzalez was the overall winner at Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ Detroit 2016 beating both students and professionals alike.  Gonzalez, competes out of Glendale and is originally from Mexico.  He previously attended Art Center at Night and is now a full time student in Art Center’s Transportation Design program expected to graduate in 2019. In keeping with the Small Business theme, Gonzalez does freelance work through his firm, OmarG Design.  We don’t need to give much background here, if you want to know more about him, check out our interview with Omar Gonzalez, the 2016 Detroit Sketchmaster here.

Chris Corrado – Concept Design Academy

Our second sketch-battler is Chris Corrado, originally from Boston, Corrado is competing out of the Los Angeles area.  Corrado currently attends The Concept Design Academy, in Pasadena, while previously attending both Art Center College of Design and the Academy of Art University located in San Francisco.  He previously interned with Jada Toys and like most students, has worked both basic customer service and retail jobs to pay the bills.  Besides the awesome name, that fact kind of makes him my personal favorite.

David Pichla – College for Creative Studies

David Pichla currently works for Nippon Seiki and is a student at the College for Creative Studies graduating with a degree in Transportation Design next year.  He is the lone contestant who has made the trip from Detroit, so we can at least award him some sort of distance travel award.

Joseph Robinson – Art Center College of Design

We don’t have a lot of information on Joseph, just that his submission sketches are awesome and he originally is from England.  Brook went to school at Coventry so we know who he is rooting for.  Robinson is currently a student at Art Center.  Come to the Sketchbattle and meet him to find out more.

Mauri Santiago

Like Joseph, we don’t have a lot of information on Mauri, just that his submission sketches are awesome.  Come to the Sketchbattle and meet him to find out more.

Omar Rehman – Art Center College of Design

Our second contestant named Omar, this Omar is Omar Rehman.  Rehman is a Transportation Design Major at Art Center and expecting to graduate in 2018.  He is currently a design temp at Mattel for the hot wheels team working on track and playsets and has delved into die cast in the past.  Want to know more? Catch Rehman’s Local Motor’s video here.

Beto Marz  – Art Center at Night

This is the second Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment for Alfredo Roberto Martinez Perez, originally from Mexico City.  He prefers you just call him Beto Marz.  Marz competed for the first time earlier this month at the event at SEMA in Las Vegas.  He is currently attended Pasedena City College and Art Center at Night.  You can see Marz’s automotive portfolio here.

Sorie Kim – Concept Design Academy

Another second time contestant, Sorie Kim competed at the Petersen Museum event in 2016Kim is an aspiring concept artist /illustrator based in Pasadena, CA.  She majored in communication arts and then pursued a degree in Graphic Design. When she quickly realized it wasn’t what she wanted, she moved to LA to just take a few classes, and ended up falling head over heels for concept design. Sorie is currently taking classes at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena.  Check out Sorie’s tumblr here.

Xander Wang – Art Center College of Design

Our final student contestant is Xinhan Wang, aka Xander. Wang is originally from China and along with Beto Marz, competed in the last event in Las Vegas, where he led the first two rounds.  A student at Art Center, you can see some of Wang’s work here.
