While the Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ is known as a sketching/ design competition, there is no doubt that automotive design is really at its core fine art. And when the artist is as famous and talented as Camilo Pardo, the art quickly becomes out of reach for many working stiffs (myself included – I have trouble affording many of the prints I want, much less the originals). However, this Tuesday (January 12th 7-11:30pm) real original art will become affordable to the masses at the Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™.
Thanks to Camilo Pardo (famous for the last Ford GT), Ford Motor Company (famous for the all the GTs) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (famous for the Viper among many other iconic vehicles), we have found a way to give you the opportunity to own an original piece of automobile history for an unreasonably low price (in some cases free – yes you read that right, free…..read on).
First, between rounds of the Sketchbattle, Camilo will sketch live and donate the works he creates to charity, in this case Project Beautiful-Inside and Out. Make a reasonable donation to Project Beautiful and the piece is yours. We cannot thank Camilo enough for his generous contribution – the plan is for him to make 5-10 sketches in a 30 minute period so there will be plenty of art for you to grab. Please note this is not a auction – that contributes to driving the prices up. Make a nominal donation and the art will yours, first come, first serve. IS THAT AWESOME ENOUGH FOR YOU? But wait, there’s more.
In addition to Camilo, the team responsible for the 2017 Ford GT will be on hand to do the same thing. Colin Bonathan and David McCall will also sketch live (thanks guys – we owe you – free kart racing for life). We expect about the same number of sketches from them and again, a nominal donation will earn you an original signed sketch on a first come, first serve basis. NOTE that the sketches shown here are for reference only – the sketches available will be quick 2-4 minute versions of whatever the designers feel like sketching on the night of the event.
In those cases where a nominal fee is out of your price range, Ford Motor Company will be donating a few original pieces from the 2017 GT that will become a door prize for those people who reserve their ticket in advance of the event (cut off midnight 1/11/16).
In addition Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has donated the 10 stunning prints of the Hellcat and the SRT tomahawk x vision from Gran Turismo 6. if you make a donation of $25 or more you can pickup the print on your way out of the event.
That means everyone, from the broke-est student to the most successful business person will have EQUAL chance at these amazing pieces of art.
Not convinced auto design sketches are art? First, that’s just silly. Obviously you haven’t seen the fantastic sketches and drawings for the industry’s past. Want to see some now? That is totally possible as they are on display at The Scarab Club in Detroit through February 13th. American Dreaming: Car Style Exhibition is “an exhibition of 20th Century automotive design drawings from the car studios of Detroit. Over 50 works included from the period. Many retired automotive designers will be there.” Here is a great article on Hemmings about the exhibition. Please note we are not associated with this exhibition – we just love it and wanted to pass it along.
One last note, upstairs in the VIP room will be the awesome automotive art from Alikhan Kuljanov available for purchase. These beautiful pieces of art are priced between $1-2,000, which seems cheap when you see them in person. To continue the generosity of the great people we are working with, Alikhan has decided to donate 100% of the selling price of the first piece to Project Beautiful!
Ali is currently Senior Assistant Chief Designer Interiors at General Motors You can see more of his work at his tumblr page. Alikhan is also a partner with Taylor Manuilow, Creative Designer at Ford in the phenomenal website AllTheSketches, repository of all things automotive art and design.
NOTE! We are still working on securing the actual pieces for the door prize, so we will post exact details and pictures as soon as they are in our grubby little hands. Better hurry quick as we expect the event to sell out sometime this weekend. Only those who have secured a ticket prior to midnight 1/11/16 will be entered into the drawing.
