MSBE2015 – Return of the Sketchmaster

For the past two years the international automotive design community has come together with the local art and creative community to support local charities and watch Detroit’s preeminent live sketching competition, the Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment™ (MSBE).  This year the event moves from its normal after auto show black-tie date to Tuesday, January 13th after the conclusion of the annual EyesOn Design awards (the event is not affiliated with EyesOn Design).  If you wish to attend, registration details are provided at the endmsbe 2015 e-postcard_final2-page-001

A fusion of Detroit’s creative and arts community, local automotive enthusiasts and the international auto industry, MSBE is “Detroit’s first ever sketching competition and underground party – a real Fight Club of Design” according to creator Brook Banham.

With the new night, visitors from around the world will be able to join the party, as designers and students compete for the title of Sketchmaster.  The event is returning to the Hastings Street Ballroom and Tangent Gallery, site of last year’s event.  2014’s competition was in jeopardy when the record cold temperatures caused catastrophic water problems at their planned venue 48 hours before the party was to take place.  “Gallery owner Joe van Bael, rescued our event last year” stated Frank Schwartz, founder of AACS “and I think we have a home for years to come. We had such positive response from visitors around the globe it would be silly to move, one even said that we ‘exposed him to the real Detroit’”

Both students and professionals alike will compete head to head in front of the audience in a multi-round competition.  The sketches will be judged on talent, merit and ability to meet the design brief by a well know trio of undisputed talent.  Robert Walker, Chief Designer of JEEP Brand Interiors at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles leads the judging panel.  He is joined by Camilo Pardo who many will recognize as the winner of last season’s Motor City Masters TV program, but is also famous for his work as Chief Designer on the Ford GT.  The trio is rounded out by Dan Darancou who is VP of Design at CH Auto in China.
