If you have never been to the Detroit Design Festival you are missing out. Now in its third year, (read about the 2012 Event here or see the video on the inaugural 2011 event here). this year’s event looks to be even bigger and better with the addition of 3 new Design Battles – Sketch, Car and Dance!
Many of you may be familiar with Middlecott Design, a sponsor of our Designer Night at the Races™ Events. Middlecott brings their Sketchbattle Experiment to the DDF with a STREET ART SKETCHBATTLE. Personally, I am most looking forward to this live competition for artists to reinterpret car brand logos in the medium of street art on a 6’ x 8’ board.
The Logo competition will be judged by a panel of Design Experts including Larry Erikson, Camillo Pardo and Kyle Evans among others. Competitors will work in front of an audience and have 7 hours to complete their piece. The competition will start at noon on Saturday, September 21st 2013 at 4262 Grand River, Detroit.
In addition to the Logo Battle, their will be a CUSTOM SHOW CAR BATTLE. In this showdown, contestants with unusual and customized cars will show off their ride. Judging criteria includes; uniqueness, wow factor and design intent. The car show battle is open to every type of customized cars from low riders, donks, ricers, rat rods, custom specials to race cars and hot rods. You can visit the Facebook page to see a list of entrants.
The final battle will be the BREAK DANCE BATTLE. The BBoy Cypher/ breakdance battle will be a break dancing competition to prove who has the illest moves. Entry fee is $5 at the door per dancer and the event is open to the public. Competition runs from 12 noon till 8 in the evening.
If you would like to be a last minute entrant to any of the battles, check out the rules here (and make sure to tell them we sent you).
